This web site is a cooperative effort of The Governor's Office of the Workforce Commission and the four Louisiana Area Health Education Centers (AHECs):
Since 1992, all editions of the Louisiana Health Careers Directory have been a production partnership of the Louisiana Area Health Education Centers (AHECs), the Louisiana Hospital Association and the Metropolitan Hospital Council of New Orleans. With advancements in technology, the directory has evolved from paper copy, to CD-ROM, to an internet-based format. Thanks to the coordination by and principal funding from the Governor’s Office of the Workforce Commission, the current (sixth) edition is a fully interactive, state-of-the-art website.
The Governor's Office of the Workforce Commission currently coordinates workforce development planning and activities and provides staff support to the Louisiana Workforce Commission, HealthWorks Commission and Occupational Forecasting Conference. The National Area Health Education Center Program was established by federal legislation in 1971. Today, a network of AHECs work throughout Louisiana and across the nation to:

Develop health careers recruitment in underserved rural and urban areas for under-represented and disadvantaged populations |

Support the community-based training of primary care health professions students and residents in health professional shortage areas and medically underserved areas |

Provide information dissemination, educational support, and technical assistance to reduce professional isolation, increase retention, and enhance the practice environment; |

|
Promote improved health and increased disease prevention in a manner that responds to defined community needs, with emphasis on rural areas and underserved populations |
The Louisiana AHECs are non-profit, community-based organizations that work to improve the health of the citizens of Louisiana through numerous programs and collaborations with state, federal and private institutions.
Louisiana has four Area Health Education Centers, each covering a different geographical portion of the state. The parishes served by the Louisiana AHECs and their respective contact information are published below.
